BPL 2022: Sunil Narine hit a stormy half-century

Sunil Narine of the West Indies has the second-fastest fifty in T20 cricket and the second-fastest half-century in the Bangladesh Premier League. The 33-year-old off-spinner shattered his own five-year-old record by scoring a half-century in only 13 balls. He smashed runs and became the joint-fastest fifty in T20 cricket while playing for Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Narine has scored half-centuries in the IPL before, scoring one in 15 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2017 and another in 17 balls against the same team in 2018.

He opened the innings for Comilla Victorians in the T20 league’s second qualifier, hitting a six off the first ball. In the first over of Shoriful Islam, he scored 14 runs in four balls, hitting one six and two fours. In the next over, Narine faced Mehidi Hasan Miraj and hit two consecutive sixes, a four, and then another six. With a six in 13 balls, he reached his tenth half-century in T20 cricket. Narine’s half-century innings did not last long, as he was dismissed for 57 runs in 16 balls.

In the match played at Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Chittagong Challengers batted first and scored 148 runs in 19.1 overs. On the strength of Narine’s stormy innings, Comilla Victorians won the match by seven wickets with 43 balls to spare. Moeen Ali, in addition to Naren, gave an all-around performance. He not only bowled three wickets, but he also batted unbeaten for 30 runs in 13 balls.

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, Caribbean batsman Chris Gayle, and Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai share the record for the fastest T20 half-century. They’ve all reached half-centuries in the space of 12 balls. At the same time, former England batsman Marcus Trescothick and now Sunil Narine have achieved the second fastest fifty in 13 balls.
