The motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Earlier in his speech, however, he made a strong attack on Congress. PM Modi surrounded Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for Goa’s independence on one occasion. He claimed that Goa’s independence would not have taken as long if there had been a strategic leader like Sardar Patel. However, some leaders were concerned about their international image and refused to send troops to Goa outright.
What did Prime Minister Modi have to say about Goa in the Rajya Sabha?
During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The people of Goa must have paid attention to what I said. Sardar Patel devised a strategy for Junagadh in the same way he devised one for Hyderabad. If Sardar Patel had followed the same plan for Goa. Goa would not have had to remain a slave for the next 15 years after India’s independence if it had been. According to media reports at the time, the then-Prime Minister’s first priority was to protect his international image. This pundit Nehru was thinking, “My image in the world will be ruined.”
“When shots were fired at the Satyagrahis, Nehru ji felt that his image as an international leader would be tarnished. When my Indian brothers and sisters were being shot at, our Prime Minister declared, “I am the country’s army.” I’m not going to send. The Satyagrahis will not receive any assistance from Congress. For Goa’s independence, many brave sons of the country had to be sacrificed.”
‘We will not send our army to Goa,’ the Red Fort has declared.
On August 15, 1955, Nehru ji spoke from the Red Fort. I’d like to coat If members of the Congress had been present, they would have had a great time listening to Nehru ji – “Don’t be fooled into thinking we’ll go to war there. There is no force in Goa. People on the inside hope that a situation will arise in which we will have to deploy our army. You’ll feel compelled to send. Please understand that we will not be sending troops. This is Nehru ji’s message to the people of Goa. According to Nehru ji, “Those who are going will be delighted to be there. But keep in mind that if you call yourself a Satyagrahi, you must adhere to Satyagraha’s principles. In Satyagraha, no bullets are fired. Allow Goa to be alone during the Satyagraha.”
According to the PM, Nehru ji had also warned the leaders who were planning a Satyagraha for Goa’s independence at the time. During that time, many leaders, including Lohia ji, were travelling to Goa. “Look, look at the joke, what arrogance is visible for the countrymen,” PM said of Jawaharlal Nehru’s Red Fort speech.
